Windows Xp has an annoying habit of refusing to alphabetise the items in your Start menu. Luckily, there's a way around. Open the Start menu and click Programs. Use your mouse cursor to point to any entry in the Programs menu, and click the right mouse button. From the context-sensitive menu, select Sort By Name. In the blink on an eye, Windows will alphabetically reorder the items listed. Unfortunately, you'll have to repeat this procedure after you install new programs.

Get portable with apps

Windows programs usually insist on being installed in a PC's "Program Files" Folder. But some programs can be tweaked to run on cheap, compact USB Flash Drives - tweaked to run them on any windows computer you encounter and take your own settings and data with you.

Visit http://www.portableapps.com to download installers for such programs as the Firefox web brower. This site also features portable versions of several security and system repairs programs - collect them on a USB drive if you regularly get asked to fix friends' computers.
